Elementary Level Curriculum

Our school is guided by a strategic plan that outlines a detailed focus on academic excellence. We prepare students to succeed in the future by teaching:

  • The beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith for daily life
  • The importance of stewardship and Catholic social justice
  • The responsibility necessary for students to become capable adults
  • Effective communication, thinking, creative expression, problem-solving and research skills
  • Collaboration among students, faculty, parents and administration

We are accredited by the State of Nebraska and use the Omaha Archdiocesan standards-based curriculum, which includes these core areas: religion, language arts, math, social studies and science.
All students take standardized tests three times per year to help teachers monitor their growth and ensure each child is progressing toward academic goals.

  • Differentiated Learning

Teachers at STM understand that every child learns differently. With small reading and math groups, modified assignments and extra support when needed, students will get the help they need to master core skills across subject areas.

  • Faith in All We Do

Children grow in their relationship with God through daily prayer, weekly Mass, and hands-on faith experiences. We are also lucky to have tremendous support from the St. Thomas More Parish, so students can benefit from classroom visits from the priest, as well as through the example of parishioners who celebrate Mass alongside them.

  • Strong Community Support

STM fosters meaningful connections across grade levels. Students are paired with each other for Bengal Buddies reading practice and many other special celebrations throughout the school year. We believe that when students feel part of something bigger, they will be more engaged in our school and broader community.

  • A Well-Rounded Education

Our elementary curriculum goes beyond memorizing facts. Our goal is to prepare students in all grades for lifelong success by encouraging a love of learning and of Jesus. Beyond traditional core subjects, students have additional opportunities, such as:

    • Visual Arts Program
    • Weekly Library Time
    • Weekly Music Classes
    • Weekly Physical Education Classes
    • Spanish Class

Outdoor Nature Classroom

The St. Thomas More Learning Garden is a special place for our school community to enjoy. It is an outdoor classroom years in the making–and an extension of our indoor spaces where students can explore, create and connect with God’s creation.

This nature-based area is thoughtfully designed to engage students in meaningful learning through music, movement, science, prayer and play. The Outdoor Nature Classroom has everything from soil observation and sensory walls to quiet reading areas and stations symbolizing the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. The garden is a place where you can see students wonder and grow, as they’re given space to think and reflect.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Starting in Pre-K, students participate in the Montessori-based Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program. St. Thomas More is one of a small number of Catholic schools in Omaha who offer this unique opportunity for students. Rather than a traditional classroom setting, CGS takes place in a peaceful, child-sized space called the Atrium, where children are invited to encounter God through hands-on materials, quiet reflection, joyful songs and meaningful activities. Students explore Scripture and the liturgy in ways that feel natural and personal to them. It’s a gentle, sacred space where faith grows through wonder, discovery and heartfelt prayer!

Pawprints preschool was simply the best experience we could have hoped for in transitioning to a learning environment. Our kids received the love and friendship that we were so eager for them to experience at school but we were blown away at the level of education they received. Our kids graduated Pawprints with skills that made them very successful in Kindergarten and with their own growing sense of love for God. Truly a welcoming community and school!

On our drive to St. Thomas More, we pass many schools that our children could attend, however we happily make the drive to STM because of the wonderful community. I am alumni of STM and have always felt the staff here have been exceptional. You trust the people teaching your children and get to know the families of the students your kids are surrounded by. You feel safe leaving your children with the staff and know they have your child's best interest at heart. We know our children are getting the love, support, and spiritual guidance they need day in and day out. We are family raising our families, together in love and Christ.

I sent my son to Pawprints Preschool not really knowing what to expect. The staff exceeded my expectations with their excellent communication and caring for their students. My son enjoyed learning and loved attending class! We were amazed at the progress he made in his work in such a short time! Completely satisfied and highly recommend Pawprints to everyone!

We were very pleased with our experiences with the STM Pawprints preschool program. Each of our daughters strengthened their faith, learned the lifelong values of friendship and kindness, and were also well prepared for Kindergarten.

What truly sets Saint Thomas More apart from other Consortium schools is the unique learning garden, which provides students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. The teachers are wonderful, and the family-like community creates such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We couldn’t be happier to be part of the STM family!
