Middle School

Where Strong Academics

Meets Confident Kids

Students in 5th-8th grades at St. Thomas More are challenged intellectually, supported emotionally and formed spiritually. Our curriculum, values and community help students transition to high school with confidence—academically, socially, and spiritually. Caring teachers and small class sizes are two reasons that middle school parents tell us they appreciate their experience at STM. We are also proud to share that most of our 8th graders continue on to Catholic high schools, confident and prepared for their next step.

The Middle School Experience

  • Academics that inspire and prepare

The middle school curriculum at STM is aligned with Archdiocese of Omaha standards, including advanced math, hands-on science and rich language arts instruction. Many students test a grade level higher in math and/or reading, and our small class sizes allow teachers to customize learning in a way that encourages students to think critically and creatively while collaborating with each other.

About Us

Middle School Curriculum

  • Junior High Religion

Finding God helps young people encounter the truth and beauty of the Catholic faith during a vital time in their personal and spiritual growth. Students discover their unique place in the story of our faith.

This dynamic program engages the whole person through:

    • Prayer and Scripture
    • Multimedia and relevant life experiences
    • Art, music, and media
    • Authentic witness and service to others through meaningful content and multiple points of connection
  • English Language Arts (ELA)

Our ELA curriculum is aligned with both Nebraska State Standards and Archdiocese of Omaha Standards, providing a rigorous and well-rounded foundation for all students.

We use Wit & Wisdom, a high-quality, content-rich program that:

    • Builds knowledge through engaging texts
    • Develops vocabulary and English language conventions
    • Promotes research, analytical thinking and communication skills
    • Uses Socratic Seminars to strengthen speaking and listening
  • Math

Our math curriculum is aligned with the Nebraska State Standards and the Archdiocese of Omaha Math Standards, ensuring a strong, standards-based foundation for all learners. For the 2025–2026 school year, we are piloting two research-based programs: Math in Focus (Singapore Math®, Grades K–8), which emphasizes visual learning and deep conceptual understanding, and enVision® Mathematics, a program that blends problem-based learning with visual instruction—particularly effective at the middle school level.

    Middle School Math Focus
Our middle school program prepares students for high school success by strengthening skills in:

      • Numeration & number sense
      • Computation & estimation
      • Geometry & spatial reasoning
      • Data analysis, probability & statistics
      • Algebraic concepts

    Accelerated Math: C.A.M.P.
The Consortium Accelerated Mathematics Program (C.A.M.P.) supports advanced learners by allowing students to move ahead of grade level based on readiness:

    • Grade-level advancement based on readiness
    • Opportunities to complete up to geometry by 8th grade
    • Partnerships with local Catholic high schools (e.g., Gross Catholic, Marian, Skutt, Creighton Prep) for a seamless transition into high school-level coursework
  • Science

Our science curriculum, guided by the Nebraska State Standards and the Archdiocese of Omaha Science Standards, provides students with a rich and developmentally appropriate education that inspires curiosity and a love of learning. We use Bring Science Alive! by Teachers Curriculum Institute (TCI), a dynamic middle school curriculum fully aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Building on foundational skills from elementary school, Bring Science Alive! encourages deeper scientific inquiry across three key areas: Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science. Through hands-on investigations, interactive lessons and real-world applications, students are empowered to think critically, ask thoughtful questions and engage deeply with scientific concepts. This approach not only strengthens their knowledge but also fosters collaboration, creativity and a meaningful understanding of how science impacts the world around them.

Extracurricular Activities

STM students have many ways to get involved. We have a strong athletics program, band and choir, service clubs and more to find new talents, friends and passions.
